About
-
The Chef Welfare Institute is a social enterprise commited to improving working conditions in the hospitality industry.
-
Through its Chef Welfare Award programme, it will assess staff welfare using an organisational survey and grant an Award for excellent treatment of staff, which expires annually.
-
This certification will reward restaurants for treating staff well, help hospitality workers to find good employers, and allow consumers to consider working conditions when choosing where to eat out.

What are the benefits of the Chef Welfare Award?

Helps with retention and hiring
Rewards good working conditions
Encourages culture change
Hiring and staff retention are challenges for the hospitality industry. An award will help to attract applications by showing a restaurant is a great place to work, whilst the survey process provides a way to identify and address workplace problems.
There’s currently no way for consumers to choose a restaurant that treats staff well. A Chef Welfare Award will do this by providing a certification that can be advertised online or through window stickers.
Working conditions in the hospitality industry can be poor. The Award will incentivise good behaviour in the industry by creating a commercial advantage for firms who treat their staff well.
How will it work?
1. Organisational survey
Staff complete an anonymous online survey measuring worklife quality.
2. Result and summary report
We provide a report summarising the results and making recommendations.
3. Time limited award
Passing restaurants receive a time limited award and comms pack to publicise it.
